In Shamanic tradition, prayer is often addressed to spirits, ancestors, animal totems, the elements, the energies of Mother Earth and the cosmos.
Prayer is a dialogue, not just a request. It is first and foremost opening oneself to listen and to receive guidance. Prayer recognises the interconnectedness of all life, and we see ourselves as part of a living web.
Mother Moon has great influence over our lives and she can provide healing and guidance as well as providing strength to our intentions if we ask her to. At the new moon, the moon’s light rests at its darkest point. A quiet pause before the cycle begins again. This is a good time to set intentions for what we want to welcome into our lives for the coming cycle. I wrote this prayer for you to invoke the power of the moon’s energy at this moment.
New Moon Prayer
By Nina Young
Beloved Mother Moon, hidden and wise,
I call to you in your quiet power, your gentle presence.
Guide my heart, illuminate my soul,
As I step into this new turning, I ask for abundance.
May my intentions take root in fertile soil,
May they grow strong, aligned with my highest path,
And blossom with grace and ease, under your watchful gaze.
As your face returns from darkness, gathering strength,
So too rises my resolve, steady, unwavering, alive.
I honour your wisdom, your cycles, your nurturing embrace,
I open to your guidance,
And I walk this new moon with courage, clarity, and presence.
Close the Prayer and Make an Offering
Sit in silence for a few moments. Whisper your personal intentions aloud. Feel the energy of your intentions merging with the new moon’s energy. Listen and feel if you notice any change in sensations. Don’t try to put any feelings into words. Just observe and notice. You may:
- Light a candle to symbolise your intentions
- Place a small offering e.g. flowers, shells or crystals, in gratitude
Whisper final words to confirm the intention is set “And so it will be. The seeds are sown, the path is open.”
